HALLOWEEN FACTS

What is Halloween and why is it celebrated?

Halloween is celebrated each year on 31 October.   This year Halloween is  on Thursday 31 October 2019.

When is Halloween celebrated in New Zealand?

Halloween means the evening before All Hallows Day (or All Saint’s Day) celebrated on 1 November each year.  Both events paid homeage to the hallows known as saints.  Halloween falls on 31 October because the ancient Gaelic festival of Samhain was considered the earliest know root of Halloween and marks the change of seasons and when the door between this world and the next world was open and spirits could pass through.  Halloween has lost most of its spiritual meaning and is currently celebrated by children dressing up and going trick-or-treating in their local community.
