Auckland Zoo is home to 135 different species with over 1,400 animals with the largest diversity of wildlife in New Zealand and is a fun family day out with the kids. The Zoo is set in 17 hectares of lush parkland and only a short drive from central Auckland. 

There’s lots to see and do all year round at Auckland Zoo, including events, keeper talks, behind-the-scenes experiences and more!

The Zoo is a not-for-profit organisation focused on conserving the world’s wildlife and wild places. Every visit to Auckland Zoo helps build a future for wildlife as the money from ticket sales contributes to the work at the Zoo and around New Zealand and overseas. 


What animals can you see at Auckland Zoo?

Auckland Zoo has elephants, rhinos, giraffes, lions, tigers, red panda, meerkats, penguins, otters, sealsm kiwis, exotic birds, frogs, tortoises, tuataras, wetas and more animals.

Junior Keeper school holiday experience

The popular Junior Keeper school holiday experience provides kids with an insight into the role of modern Zoos and the daily duties of a zoo keeper. Each day is designed to combine fun animal facts and behind-the-scenes tours, with age appropriate practical activities such as meeting, feeding, cleaning and caring for a selection of the Zoo’s animals. This experience also includes a take-home memento – a USB full of photos of the kids enjoying their day!

Safari nights

Every school holiday season, Auckland Zoo’s experienced hosts offer a guided tour to see what the animals are up to after dark!  Feast on a BBQ dinner, then venture on a tour of the Zoo by torchlight. The school holiday safari nights are a unique experience that provides a rare insight into animal behaviour, habitats and diets. This is a family experience for adults and children aged 8 and above.

Behind the scenes

Choose from 7 different Behind the Scene Experiences to meet one of these zoo animals: Giraffe, Red Panda, Galapagos Tortoise, Meerkat, Squirrel monkey, The Big Cats or New Zealand’s iconic Kiwi bird. Children under 15 years old must be accompanied by a paying adult on the behind the scenes experience. Each experience has different minimum aged requirement ranging from 5 years to 15 years.

Photography workshops

Children aged 10 to 14 years, and Teens aged 15 years plus and adults can learn about photography at Auckland Zoo at these workshops which cater to each age group.  The small friendly group dynamics will allows the participants to confidently master their camera. With so many great photographic opportunities at Auckland Zoo, they will have plenty of pictures and new skills to take home.

Birthday parties

Kids can have their birthday party at the Zoo. Book exclusive use of the Zoo’s private party venue for two hours, which comes with dedicated party hosts, priority parking, face painting, fresh party food, plus, all-day zoo entry for your child’s party guests.


Auckland Zoo's opening hours

The Zoo is open from 9:30am to 4:30pm every day except for Christmas Day.  Last entry at 3:30pm.

How long do you need at Auckland Zoo?

You can easily spend a full day at Auckland Zoo with your family. As a minimum we recommend you allow three hours to explore the zoo and see all of the animals with your kids.

Price

A one day pass is FREE for infants under 4 years of age; $13 for children aged 4 to 14 years; $19 for students or seniors and $24 for adults.  [Prices stated are correct at Sep 2020].

Auckland Zoo is a not-for-profit, so all of the money from every ticket sold goes towards building a brighter future for wildlife and wild places.

Location and free parking

Auckland Zoo is located at Motions Road, Western Springs, Auckland 0975, New Zealand. The Zoo has free off-street parking for cars. Accessible car parking is available in the car park closest to the main entrance for vehicles displaying a mobility parking permit.
