Get tinkering at the Marvellous Mechanica themed 2018 Kids Arts Festival. Explore and discover how things fit together; machines and movement, energy and sound, weight and light. Spark your imagination using traditional skills and techniques to devise modern inventions. Take a look inside engine rooms to build curiosity around the way things fit together. This is a FREE event offering children and their families’ loads of creative stimulation through hands-on arts experiences, together with exhibitions and live performances. Bring your own picnic lunch or visit one of the yummy food trucks on the day.

Arts Out East Showcase Day

Jam-packed day of entertainment beginning at 10am with a breath taking performance from the Edgewater Kapa Haka group. The day will continue with drop in workshops – where you can join in on a contemporary jewellery class with local artist Sarah Walker-Holt, or try your hand at traditional Chinese calligraphy and much more.  For those of you wanting to catch dance troupes take the stage, there are a range of performers to entertain you and perhaps even teach you a move or two.

Learning to ride a two-wheeler is one of those big childhood milestones, and being a part of that experience as a parent is a thrill. If you are wondering how to get started then check out the #Learn2Ride sessions.Whether starting on a balance bike or making the transition to pedals the team of qualified instructors is there to help get your kids riding. If your child doesn’t yet have a bike but is keen to give it a go, there will be bikes available on a limited basis.

The power of laughter is one infectious force – so bring your little heroes along to this action-packed giggle fest hosted by the hilarious Chris Parker (5 & 12 May) and Hayley Sproull (19 May). Stand Up for Kids is a family-friendly, interactive show aimed at 4 – 8 year olds, but suitable for kids slightly older and younger.Relax on a bean bag or grab a seat and let your laugh out for 50 minutes as comedians jive around the stage in ways that’ll make you and your kids’ bellies ache. Warning: adults have been known to enjoy these shows just as much as kids.

Sit back and relax in the high-back, reclined seats in the Stardome’s 360-degree immersive theatre as your presenter takes you on a virtual tour of the night sky for the month of your visit. After the show, you will get to look through courtyard telescopes and see up-close some of the planets and celestial objects you learnt about in the show (weather dependent and included in the price of the show. If the weather does not cooperate during your visit, you’ll receive a raincheck voucher for the telescopes).
 
Tickets: Child $12; Adult $15; Senior $12; Family (2 adults and 3 children) $40

Imagine spending years in hiding because of prejudice and hate. Developed by Anne Frank House in Amsterdam, the international exhibition Let Me Be Myself – The Life Story of Anne Frank explores how life was for Anne Frank and her family, and looks at the events surrounding the Holocaust and the rise of the Nazi Party in Germany. Auckland Museum is the first to host this exhibition in New Zealand as part of a three-year tour supported by The Holocaust Centre of New Zealand.

LEGO® lovers look out! Ryan McNaught (aka Brickman) one of only fourteen LEGO Certified Professionals globally, will bring some of the world’s most iconic landmarks and masterpieces made exclusively from LEGO bricks to Auckland Museum.
Ryan McNaught and his team have spent a jaw-dropping 4,944 hours building the 50 LEGO masterpieces that will be on display including the Taj Mahal, Michelangelo’s Statue of David, The Great Wall of China, the Empire State Building (complete with King Kong), the Leaning Tower of Pisa and the Arc de Triomphe.

It’s time to explore the world of origami at MOTAT this May, join in the fun and ignite your brain through concentration and hand-eye coordination. This is an activity the whole family can participate in as you colour and combine creative pyramids to create a personalised art-piece to take home. There’s something magical about transforming a flat sheet of paper into a colourful three-dimensional shape. Origami challenges us on a cognitive level and has been shown to have a positive effect on memory, non-verbal thinking, fine motor skills, 3D comprehension and imagination. Lots of people find it very relaxing too.
