Your winter wonderland in Aotea Square Ice Rink is back with a series of fun events. Skate or slide against the backdrop of downtown Auckland and experience the magic. For the first time, an Ice Bar will be open to all ages offering cocktails and yummy mocktails. Illuminated sculptures Pou Rama (light posts) will sit beside Aotea Square Ice Rink throughout Matariki Festival (Māori New Year).

Night Lights at MOTAT
Kick off the Matariki festivities in radiant style with this spectacular illumination event at MOTAT. Come prepared to be awed by a brilliant array of displays and artworks inspired by the objects in the Museum’s collection. The engaging interpretations created by local artists see transport and technology artefacts represented in a completely new light. Installations are complemented by light activations such as projection mapping, shadow play areas, illuminated heritage buildings and vintage trams festooned with fairy lights. Live performances throughout the museum celebrate Māori and Pasifika cultures and popular food truck Puha and Pākehā will be onsite serving up their signature Māori dishes with a modern twist.

In celebration of Matariki, catch the popular Matariki Dawn show. Using the planetarium technology, learn more about this important open star cluster and practical astronomy. Fly out to Matariki and learn the Maori names of the seven visible stars, find out why we see Matariki at certain times of the year and why the lunar calendar is important. The show includes the animated tale of Rangi and Papatuanuku and the story of Rona and the Moon. Sit back and listen to the story of the shadows on the Moon came to be as Marama the Moon captured Rona and held her in punishment for her angry outburst.

Free Drift Carting with Little Drifters
