Waitangi Day events in Auckland for Kids

On the 6th of February 1840, the Treaty of Waitangi was signed by Rangatira Māori and representatives of the Crown. Celebrate  the 178th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty at these Auckland events with your family.

Come along and join us for this free family friendly event that celebrates 2018 New Zealand.  Bring along the whole whānau to enjoy a range of delicious food stalls, an arts and crafts lane, interactive games and activities for kids, and a mobile Treaty exhibition from Auckland Museum. Bring a picnic blanket along and set yourself up in front of the stage, and enjoy a quintessential Aotearoa summer’s day. Oh..and bring your togs. The first act is on stage at 11:00am, so come along early to score yourself an awesome spot.  As a family friendly event, 2018 Waitangi Day celebrations at Okahu Bay will be strictly smoke, drug and alcohol-free, with a zero waste focus.

Cost: Free event. Parking will be available on the day for a small fee. Keep an eye out for our marshalls onsite.

Whakatau atū ki te pā, kaingia ngā kai reka, akona i ngā kōrero me te rangatiratanga o te Tiriti mā ngā mahi ā ringa.

Celebrate New Zealand’s national day by enjoying local culture, including a fantastic line-up of live music from Maisey Rika, Rootz Konekt, Sweet Echo, RnR Music and more. Visit the Waitangi village to taste Māori and Pacific kai, learn about the significance of the Treaty of Waitangi through interactive, family-friendly activities. Try something new at the arts and crafts stalls, suitable for all ages.

The celebration will begin with a public pōwhiri at 9am – offering a special chance to experience a traditional welcoming ceremony.  Grab a picnic and get along to Waitangi ki Manukau for a fantastic family day out.

Auckland Council’s Waitangi ki Manukau is a zero-waste, smoke-free and alcohol-free event, supported by Te Wānanga o Aotearoa, the Ministry of Culture and Heritage, Mai FM and Waikato Tainui.

A little kiwi chick is scheduled for release on Rotoroa Island and you’re invited! The chick’s name is Hākari, (which means celebration) and like the one pictured here, he will be 25 days old when released onto it’s new predator free home. Join us for a kiwi encounter with an Auckland Zoo ranger followed by a summer guided walk encounter, a free one and a half-hour guided tour of Rotoroa Island. The obliteration room is a family-friendly  installation by one of the world’s most popular, well-loved artists, Yayoi Kusama.  Beginning as a stark white interior in December, it encourages you to transform the space with a rainbow of brightly coloured dots. Watch as, over time, a dizzying blur of colour is built up by visitors applying brightly coloured stickers in various sizes to every surface.
