Auckland Museum has opened its first war memorial gallery for young people Pou Kanohi – New Zealand at War. It is a space where children and teenagers can learn about World War I (WWI) from multiple perspectives and contemplate why it is still relevant today.

My children’s favourite part of the Pou Kanohi exhibition was the aerial reconnaissance table where they undertook a mission piloting planes above the trenches.   There mor interactive activities, from dressing up in uniform to seeing a 3D rendered artillery gun up close with the virtual reality head set. Pou Kanohi lets the kids experience a world they can’t imagine growing up in today.

Pou Kanohi- New Zealand at War is on permanent display in the War Memorial Galleries on the top floor of Auckland Museum.
