After your child finishes primary or intermediate school you need to enrol them with a secondary school ( sometimes referred to as college or high school) to complete their last years of school.  Study at secondary school begins when students are in Year 9 and usually 12 or 13 years old.  New Zealand students must attend school until they are 16 years old. From ages 16 to 19 years old school is optional.

Choices for secondary schools include State schools, State integrated schools, private schools, Te Kura (know as the Correspondence school) and home schooling.

New Zealand’s secondary schools have a range of role sizes. Rangitoto College on the North Shore is the largest school in New Zealand with over 3,000 students, and following close behind Mt Albert Grammar School Macleans College, Auckland Grammar School, Westlake Boys High School, Epsom Girls Grammar School and Westlake Girls High School all have over 2,000 students (years 9 to 13).

You can find your secondary school zone in Auckland by going to the Education Counts website and typing in your address, or going directly to the school’s website listed below. In New Zealand if you live inside a school zone you are guaranteed a place there. Most Auckland schools have zones, so you need to live in zone  or you can apply as an out of zone student to go into the ballot if the school has any out-of-zone places available and if you are successful you can enrol.
