Family Guide to Bethells Beach (Te Henga): A Year-Round Adventure for Auckland Families

Bethells Beach, Auckland, New Zealand

If you’re looking for a wild west coast escape that feels a world away from the city – but is just 40 minutes from central Auckland – Bethells Beach (Te Henga) is a must-visit. Whether you’re wrangling toddlers, tweens or teens, this rugged coastal gem offers outdoor fun for every season!

Summer at Bethells: Wild Waves & Sand Adventures

Summer is when Bethells truly comes alive. The black sand beach, framed by dramatic cliffs and rolling dunes, is perfect for sandcastle-building, bodyboarding, and long barefoot strolls. Kids will love:

  • Rockpool exploring at the northern end of the beach at low tide—expect to find starfish, crabs and sea snails.

  • Bethells Cave (at the far end of the beach) is a hit with older kids who love exploring. Just be sure to check tide times.

  • Sand dune sliding on the walk to Lake Wainamu. Bring a boogie board or sturdy cardboard and let the kids loose.

  • Picnics by the stream—a more sheltered and calm area for little ones to paddle safely. Bethells is also one of our top family picnic spots in Auckland, so pack your snacks and make a day of it.

Top Tip: Always supervise kids near the water. Bethells has strong surf and rips. Swim only between the flags during surf club patrol hours in summer. For more tips, see our Auckland beach safety guide for families.

Winter Wanders: Cosy Walks & Nature Play

Don’t rule out Bethells in winter. The crowds disappear, the wind adds drama to the waves, and it becomes a perfect nature escape.

  • Lake Wainamu Walk is ideal in cooler months—less heat means an easier hike. The track loops around the lake with boardwalks, shaded paths and ever-changing scenery.

  • Puddle-jumping and mud-play on the way to the lake offer spontaneous, screen-free fun for younger kids—just pack gumboots and a towel.

  • Driftwood forts and creative beach play make for great family bonding.

  • Winter sunsets are often stunningly vibrant on the west coast—bring a thermos of hot chocolate and watch the colours change over the sea.

Parking can get muddy in winter- bring a change of shoes for the drive home!

Family Facilities & Local Tips

  • Toilets are available at the main car park.

  • There’s limited food nearby, so bring snacks or pack a full picnic.

  • Dogs are allowed on a lead from the carpark to the beach and off-leash north of the Waitākere River—but always check current dog access rules via Auckland Council.

  • There is no playground, but nature is the playground here.

Note: Mobile coverage can be patchy. It’s a good idea to download directions before you go and let someone know your plans.

Respecting Nature at Te Henga

Bethells is a taonga (treasure) for many, including local iwi and environmental groups. Help preserve its beauty:

  • Take all rubbish home
