MATARIKI LIGHTS: 19-25 JUNE
6.30pm-7.30pm week nights, 6.30pm-9.00pm Saturday & Sunday
Matariki Lights at Stardome will be an immersive and beautiful exterior activation that encourages manuhiri to come to Maungakiekie to celebrate Matariki with a beautiful light and sound display. It is an invitation to Aucklanders to come and enjoy Aotearoa’s first official Matariki Public Holiday.
The free event is centred around an outdoor lighting and projection installation that illuminates the exterior of the Stardome building as a unique backdrop to tell the story of Matariki. The movement of nine pillars of light will be accompanied by waves of sound to create an immersive event.
We encourage visitors to congregate on the lawn directly in front of Stardome, where the experience becomes immersive with a bespoke sound composition.
This FREE light show will run every 7-10 minutes from 6:30pm -9:30pm every night (until 10.30pm on Saturday and Sunday).
Bookings not required.
FREE TEN-MINUTE PLANETARIUM SHOWS: 19-25 JUNE
6.30pm-9.30pm week nights, 6.30pm-10.30pm Saturday & Sunday
During the week, while the light show is on in the evenings, Stardome will be open to the public, offering free 10 minute Matariki shows in the planetarium. Shows are suitable for all ages and run six nights a week, presenter-led with kōrero and audience interaction
Bookings not required, just drop in!
Stardome gives thanks and acknowledgement to the Tūpuna Maunga Authority and Ngā Mana Whenua o Tāmaki Makaurau for allowing this event to occur. Matariki Lights is supported by the Local Activation Fund Programme, administered by Auckland Unlimited on behalf of the New Zealand Government.
