Miraculous: medieval manuscripts

This exhibition is a rare opportunity to see the range of Auckland Libraries’ exceptional medieval manuscripts collection at Auckland Central Library in the city.

Use the treasure hunt activity to explore the nine very different medieval books on display. Enjoy the contrast in size between a tiny ‘Pocket’ Bible and two massive ‘Pink Elephant’ lectern Bibles. Marvel at beautifully painted illustrations of dragons, saints and scribes, and get up close to a 12th century Greek manuscript that looks like it’s been nibbled by a creature of some kind.

That these books have survived mostly intact over nine centuries is remarkable. In the age of printing and mass production, they are miraculous.
