Motu Matariki 2023 presents a talk & film screening at Waiheke Cinema by Paora Te Oti Takarangi

The kōrero led by Paora will explore colonisation in 2023 and the Māori worldview. Followed by his film “The Children of Parihaka”.

MORE INFO ON FILM:

In 1881, after being met by the pā’s children holding white feathers of peace, invading constabulary ended Te Whiti-o-Rongomai and Tohu Kākahi’s passive resistance at Parihaka in Taranaki. One of the darkest episodes of the New Zealand Wars was revisited in this documentary. The film follows another group of Taranaki children undertaking an emotional, modern-day pilgrimage to the South Island jails where their ancestors were exiled and forced to labour. Footage of their hīkoi is interwoven with their poetry, song, art and narration.

To finish the night the audience will have the opportunity to see the short film “Sister Dorothea”: which is about a pākehā nun from Jerusalem on the Whanganui river who died as a Māori.
