Event Details

Celebrating World Wetland Day on 12 February 20222 from 10 am to 2 pm at Matuku Link in Te Henga Bethells in West Auckland. The big eels will show off as usual. You’ll definitely be able to hear the birdsong, admire a fantail, tui or kereru, and maybe even spy on our resident pateke or the rare and elusive namesake Matuku (bittern). Of course their famous fundraising bbq and cake stall will be there.

Usually visits to Matuku Link are by appointment only, for working bees, events or education so enjoy the chance to visit on this public open day.

Many of Matuku Link’s partner organisations will be at the Open DAy with a stall for education and information, like Forest & Bird, Million Metres, Whitebait Connection, Birds New Zealand, PestFreeWaitakereRanges, and locally made produce will be available for sale.

Enjoy a day of wetland appreciation and fun.

You can find Matuku Link at: 111 Bethells Road, Te Henga/Bethells, West Auckland. Please bring your vaccination certificate for scanning.

The Matuku Reserve Trust owns 37 hectares of bush and wetland, called the “Matuku Link” to ensure the safety of the wildlife and as a vital connection by linking neighbouring eco-restoration projects Ark in the Park; Habitat te Henga and the Forest & Bird reserve Matuku. Over 90% of New Zealand’s wetlands have been drained or filled, yet on Auckland’s doorstep is Te Henga wetland, the largest wetland in the region. Ponds have been created with interconnecting boardwalks and trails made accessible for people of all abilities while the old barn has been transformed into a sustainable Wetland Education Centre and volunteer meeting place.
