Visiting Lake Tekapo with Kids
f you’re in search of a breath taking family getaway that will leave you and your little ones in awe, look no further than Lake Tekapo. We recently had the pleasure of going on a family holiday to this magical South Island destination, and I’m excited to share our trip with you.
The Journey to Lake Tekapo
Before we dive into the wonders of Lake Tekapo, let’s talk about the journey to get there. We started our adventure from Christchurch, and the three hour drive itself was a spectacular journey through New Zealand’s stunning South Island. We were already in awe of the picturesque landscapes of rolling hills and snow-capped peaks. We made sure to stop at some of the viewpoints along the way to stretch our legs, soak in the beauty and take plenty of family photos.
The Enchanting Lake Tekapo
Arriving at Lake Tekapo was like stepping into a fairy tale. The lake’s vibrant turquoise waters, surrounded by towering mountains took our breath away. The kids were mesmerized by the crystal-clear waters, and I couldn’t help but feel a sense of calm wash over me as we gazed at this natural wonder.
Staying in Lake Tekapo
We had booked a cozy lakeside cottage for our stay, and it was the perfect choice for a family with young children. The cabin offered all the comforts of home, including a fully equipped kitchen, comfortable beds, and a view of the lake from the deck. It provided the ideal base for our adventures in the area.
Go Stargazing with the Family in Tekapo
One of the highlights of our trip was stargazing at the Crater Experience at the Dark Sky Project mountainside observatory. The area is known for its clear night skies, making it a prime location for exploring the cosmos. The observatory offered a family-friendly stargazing tour that had our kids wide-eyed with wonder as they peered through telescopes and learned about the stars, planets, and constellations. It was a truly educational and magical experience for the entire family.
Tekapo Springs
No family trip is complete without some aquatic fun, and Tekapo Springs had us covered. The complex features hot pools, an ice-skating rink (seasonal), and snow tube park. Our kids had a blast splashing around in the hot pools while we relaxed and enjoyed the surrounding views of Mount John and Lake Tekapo. It was a great way to unwind after a day of exploring.
Exploring the Natural Beauty
During our visit, we embarked on a family-friendly hike along the Lake Tekapo Walking Track. This easy trek took us along the lake’s edge, providing numerous opportunities to enjoy the South Island landscape and spot some of the local wildlife. The kids enjoyed seeing the ducks and swans up close, and we even encountered some friendly locals who shared their knowledge of the area with us.
Having fun at the Tekapo Playground
The Tekapo Playground is on Domain Drive and overlooks the lake. The kids love playing on the giant slide, swings and the flying fox.
Delicious Dining Options
Lake Tekapo offers a variety of dining options to suit every palate. We enjoyed delicious meals at local cafes and restaurants, where we indulged in New Zealand’s culinary delights. Don’t forget to try some of the locally sourced salmon; it’s a must!
When is the best time to visit Lake Tekapo?
Any time of year is great, but it depends on what you want to do for what season is best. For stargazing, the winter skies are the best during the cooler months. You can see the Aurora Australis in the Southern Sky best between March and September. If you want to see the lupins, then you should visit in late Springs. And if you want to go all the watersports on the lakes and surrounding rivers then Summer is the best!
A Memorable Family Holiday
Our trip to Lake Tekapo was a truly unforgettable family holiday. It’s a destination that effortlessly blends natural beauty with family-friendly activities, making it an ideal choice for parents with kids of all ages. Whether you want to relax and soak in the scenery or embark on exciting adventures, Lake Tekapo has something for everyone.
So, if you’re considering a family getaway that combines breath taking landscapes, stargazing, outdoor fun, and delicious cuisine, we wholeheartedly recommend Lake Tekapo.
