What games did your great-great-grandparents play? What games did kids play five hundred years ago? What are your favourite games to play today? Join in the fun at this celebration of tākarokaro / children’s play, in different times, places and cultures.
Come along with your whānau, learn about some old games and some new ones, dress up, and stay and play!
This is a free exhibition of games, books, photos, manuscripts, and more from the Sir George Grey Special Collections. Read an instruction book for board games from 1786, see some nineteenth-century tin soldiers with a royal connection, learn about the hula hoop craze of the 1950s, compare Māori and Pākeha versions of mūtōrere (draughts), and try your hand at putting on a sock puppet show.
This exhibition is on daily (excluding public holidays) until 1 March 2020.
Please note that this event does not start until 10am on Saturday and Sunday.
