The Buckland family called Highwic home for over 100 years, with the original property consisting of five acres, divided into two distinct areas by a steep escarpment. Led by an expert Highwic heritage guide, this tour explores how the site’s spectacular topography shaped both the home and gardens.
The lower flat area was divided into a vegetable garden and a large paddock. The main house, stables, billiard house, fernery and gardens were situated on top of a low volcanic crag.
Highwic’s original topography was uniquely enhanced by its gardeners including Mr Speary who was well-known throughout Auckland for his award-winning sweet peas. Highwic’s gardens still contain many varieties of sweet peas in honour of Mr Speary and his dedication to Highwic’s gardens for over a decade.
Bookings are required as spaces are limited. To book contact Highwic on 09 524 5729 or email highwicfunctions@heritage.org.nz
