(Saturday) 6:00 am - 10:00 am

Event Details

Herald the Māori new year at Takaparawhau | Bastion Point – a place of special significance to Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei and the history of Tāmaki Makaurau. Tama nui te rā (the sun) will rise across the Waitematā and bring forth the dawn light on Takaparawhau on Sat 19 June.

Please join Ngāti Whātua Ōrāke to commemorate those who have passed, acknowledge those who remain, plan for the approaching seasons and welcome the new year with karanga, karakia, waiata and kotahitanga (unity).

Matariki is a cluster of nine stars rising in the Southern Skies during winter which for most signals the beginning of the Māori New Year. It’s a time to remember, reflect and wānanga for the upcoming year.

Following the blessing, there will be a light breakfast, entertainment and the opportunity to learn more about the history and stories of Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei. Dress warmly.

Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei are pleased to take on the mantle as iwi manaaki (host iwi) for the 2021 Matariki Festival, in partnership with Te Kaunihera o Tāmaki Makaurau.
