The FREE walking trail experience beginning in Aotea Square is available anytime between 10am – 4pm and takes approximately 30 minutes.

Something magical is lurking beneath the streets of Auckland. Horotiu, the taniwha, lives deep underground and he is unhappy, as the stream in his care has been forgotten. Can you help our superheroes, Pipi and Pou, calm him before it’s too late?

Jump into the world of Tim Tipene’s award-winning book series through the FREE digital adventure trail created using PickPath – a new platform for compelling interactive storytelling experiences developed by Aotearoa-based artists.

Perfect for ages 4-10 and their adults, the experience is best enjoyed in groups of 2 – 6 people. This walking trail starts in Aotea Square and will take place outside, so please dress for the weather.

Pipi and Pou and the Forgotten Stream is an app guided experience starting in Aotea Square and leading families on a short walk down Queen Street and surrounding laneways, and is available on both Android and Apple devices. Along the journey a story will unfold, and you will find activities and clues to help solve the mystery. If you have any issues accessing the app on your device, please visit one of the friendly Auckland Writers Festival volunteers in Aotea Square. Please note that only one mobile device is needed per group and headphones are not required for this adventure.

This event is supported by Heart of the City.

Auckland Writers Festival

Every year Auckland Writers Festival stage over 200 public events, gathering together 230 of the world’s best writers and thinkers to celebrate the world of books and ideas.

For the past 22 years the Festival has enriched the culture of our city and established itself as a major Australasian festival, characterised not only by the calibre of our guest authors but also by the enthusiasm and engagement of our audience and the warmth and welcome provided by Auckland as our setting.

The Festival brings the very best local and international writers of contemporary fiction and non-fiction, scientists, economists, poets, journalists and public intellectuals together with audiences to explore ideas, share stories and experience brilliant conversations. We celebrate curiosity and a sense of intellectual adventure and our programme is driven by the desire to spark ideas, to get us talking and to give us a time and place to engage with the world.
