Event Details

Calling all junior scientists and bird lovers! For the school holidays, Rotoroa Island Trust invite you to count birds like a pro on the Rotoroa Island Bird Count Challenge!

Help make a special note of the wildlife you see around the island and contribute to the NZ Bird Atlas 5-year mapping project.

Rotoroa Island sanctuary is home to native species including tīeke, takahē, pāteke, kiwi, popokotea (whitehead), tui, and skinks. It’s a fabulous reason to spend time outdoors, and you’ll be doing your bit for science and New Zealand’s (plus Rotoroa’s) wildlife. You will receive a special badge for your efforts, honouring you as a ‘Bird Count Pro!’

On arrival, just grab a free ecosystem fan deck, an observation map, and make a special note of the wildlife you see around the island. Bring to the kiosk at the end and this info will be collated into the NZ Bird Atlas.

Family Ferry pass to get to Rotoroa Island is $130.00 for 2 adults and 2 Kids. Extra children $10 each. Visit Fullers website to book your tickets, to ensure they have have capacity on the day you wish to go.

The Bird Count Challenge is Free.
