Calling all junior scientists and bird lovers! For the school holidays, Rotoroa Island Trust invite you to count birds like a pro on the Rotoroa Island Bird Count Challenge!

Help make a special note of the wildlife you see around the island and contribute to the NZ Bird Atlas 5-year mapping project.

Rotoroa Island sanctuary is home to native species including tīeke, takahē, pāteke, kiwi, popokotea (whitehead), tui, and skinks. It’s a fabulous reason to spend time outdoors, and you’ll be doing your bit for science and New Zealand’s (plus Rotoroa’s) wildlife. You will receive a special badge for your efforts, honouring you as a ‘Bird Count Pro!’

On arrival, just grab a free ecosystem fan deck, an observation map, and make a special note of the wildlife you see around the island. Bring to the kiosk at the end and this info will be collated into the NZ Bird Atlas.
