Event Details

Sculpture on the Gulf (SOTG), Waiheke Island is New Zealand’s foremost outdoor sculpture exhibition, and aims to make a unique contribution to the cultural life of New Zealanders and visitors by creating opportunities for people to experience the power and beauty of contemporary sculpture in the landscape. This year marks the 9th Sculpture on the Gulf since its inception in 2003.

For the 2019 event we have an exciting mix of beautiful, inspiring and challenging sculptures by leading New Zealand contemporary artists alongside emerging local talent.

Expect to see dramatic large-scale works in a range of materials, some will be big and bold while others will be quiet and secluded; a few will be playfully architectural, while there may be one or two which might just require a little help from visitors to reach their full potential. Altogether this mix of sculptures will be guaranteed to offer our visitors an exceptional experience of contemporary New Zealand sculpture in an iconic landscape setting.

The 2km long Matiatia walkway is an inspirational site and works that have been developed in relationship to their site have always been the most successful and well received.

While the majority of works are located on the Matiatia walkway, the event footprint will also include works in the Artworks precinct and Alison Park, giving you a chance to explore more of Oneroa Village and Waiheke Island.

The small sculpture exhibition will be showcased at the Waiheke Community Art Gallery in Oneroa where our artists have smaller sculptures inspired by their work with our event. You’ll also find small sculpture work from other artists from around New Zealand.
