Bring the whānau, join the dance, and celebrate Scotland heritage at our family-friendly cultural day.

Scots wha hae! (Scots we have) ceud mìle fàilte – a hundred thousand welcomes!

Join Auckland Museum for a lively, family-friendly celebration of Scottish heritage at Tartan Day. Whether you have Scottish ancestry, a love of Celtic culture, or are simply looking for a fun day out, experience the traditions, music and stories that travelled from Scotland to Aotearoa New Zealand.

The day begins with the stirring sound of a lone piper on the Museum steps, followed by a ceremonial procession of the clans.

Throughout the day, enjoy live performances and demonstrations in Te Ao Mārama South Atrium, from energetic Highland dancing to fiddle. Families are invited to join in traditional ceilidh dancing, design their own tartan, explore the clan expo and connect with Scottish clan representatives.

Witness a traditional haggis ceremony, complete with the famous address to the “Great Chieftain o’ the puddin-race”, and sample this iconic dish. You’ll also see a demonstration of traditional Scottish dress, including the historic great kilt and distinctive tartans.

Celebrate the enduring cultural links between Scotland and Aotearoa, and feel free to attend in tartan. The day will conclude with a rendition of “Auld Lang Syne”, bringing everyone together in true Scottish spirit.
