Morning walk guided by the Supporters of Tiritiri Matangi.
The guide will lead you to the kororā (little blue penguins) nesting boxes and if you are lucky you will see the little blue penguins, plus show you the best spots to watch native birdlife and how to identify the bird calls echoing through the trees. Learn about the history of the island, the native plants around you, and how the forest has been restored to its current glory.
Guides will organise guests into small groups based on walking track preference. There are two track options – both with ample opportunities to spot birdlife.
- Wattle Track – the shorter route is 2 km and takes approximately 90 minutes.
- Kawarau Track – the longer route is 3km and takes up to 2 hours, or maybe longer depending on what you see along the way.
Finish the tour at the visitor centre where you can browse through informative exhibits and visit the gift shop while sipping complimentary tea and coffee. Afterwards, take a stroll to the famous Tiritiri Matangi Lighthouse – it’s a great spot to have lunch! You’ll still have plenty of time to explore the rest of the island on your own afterwards before the afternoon ferry takes you back to Auckland City.
Walking tracks are either hard surface, grass, or boardwalks, with many wooden steps. If you have a child in a pushchair, please be prepared for some lifting. Mountain buggies are more suitable than regular pushchairs for the majority of tracks. Alternatively, a baby/toddler backpack is recommended for little ones. If you or the kids prefer not to carry your day pack with you during the guided walk, you’ll have the option to collect it from the Visitor Centre later.
Tours operate: Wednesday to Sunday in the January school holidays. Guided walks meet every ferry sailing sailing and begins directly after the ranger’s briefing.
