In celebration of te tau hou Māori, the Māori new year, invite all to join us for an Umu Kohukohu Whetū on our whenua, Takaparawhau Bastion Point.
An Umu Kohukohu Whetū is a traditional oven and offering to the stars, which involves lighting a hāngī / umu (earth oven) before sunrise on the first day of Matariki, as well as karakia, karanga and waiata, to welcome the Māori new year. For most, this is also a time to remember, reflect and prepare for the upcoming year.
Whānau and communities are all welcome to attend the celebration to witness a Hautapu ceremony and experience the Umu Kohukohu Whetū first-hand.
