15 FREE things to do together with your Mum on Mother's Day

Mother’s Day is coming up this year on Sunday 11 May 2025 in New Zealand.
What do you get the Mum who has it all? Or if you are on a tight budget and can’t afford to buy a Mother’s Day gift, what do you do? Time spent together is a great way to celebrate Mums. Try one of these suggestions of fun FREE things you and the kids can do to celebrate Mother’s Day together this year!
1. Give Mum breakfast in bed
Start Mother’s Day off by giving Mum a home made breakfast and coffee in bed at home. It can be as simple as toast with her favorite spread or a bowl of cereal, or something more elaborate if the kids are old enough to cook!
2. Make it a chore free day for Mum
Make sure the rest of your family does all the household chores, like doing the dishes, vacuuming, and folding laundry on Mother’s Day so your Mum can put her feet up for the day!
3. Watch Mum's favourite family movies
Have a family movie night on Mother’s Day at home. Make some popcorn and choose Mum’s favourite family movies to watch together.
4. Enjoy the day doing what Mum wants to do
Choose your Mum’s favourite hobby that she never get’s to do because she is usually too busy taking the kids out and about where they want to go, then set aside the whole day to do it with her. Mum’s will enjoy spending time together on Mother’s Day as a family, especially as they get to do their favourite hobby. Whether that’s doing yoga, dancing, drawing, singing, gardening, shopping or something else.
5. Go for a local bike ride
If the weather is nice go on a family bike ride (just don’t go too far away from home). Let Mum choose the route of where she would like to go, or you could surprise her by making a local bike trail to follow in the neighbourhood.
6. Put on a show
The kids can put on a show at home just for Mum. Whether they want to sing, dance, do circus tricks or make a puppet show they will find something to entertain Mum and have fun creating it themselves.
7. Get out a book of your Mum's favourite author from the library
If your Mum is a bookworm but doesn’t usually have time to read, then get out a new book from the library in advance and let her enjoy reading it on Mother’s Day. And if you don’t have time to get to the library, don’t worry you can borrow an electronic book using OverDrive or Libby from Auckland Libraries for your Mum and have it ready to give her on Mother’s Day.
8. Have a picnic at home
Find a place in your garden, or if it’s a wet day don’t worry, you can still enjoy a picnic for Mum in your lounge with picnic blankets and picnic food set up inside!
9. Play a game
Play one of Mum’s favourite board, card or table games together. Just make sure the kids let her win some of the games when you play.
10. Have a family Karaoke party
Search up your Mum’s favourite songs on Youtube to sing along to at home. Just make sure you put “karaoke” after the songs name when you search and you are bound to find something.
11. Look back through your old digital photos
Most of us don’t print out all of our photo’s anymore. It’s fun to look at our older digital albums together and reminisce over the old photos of holidays (including when we were lucky to be able to travel overseas) and funny occasions that you enjoyed together as a family.
12. Visit her favourite museum or art gallery
If your Mum is a museum or art gallery buff you can visit some of the world’s best museums and art galleries online together from the comfort of your own home. Of you can venture out to visit the Auckland Museum, the Auckland Art Gallery, NZ Maritime Museum or MOTAT for the day.
13. Go for a local walk together
Take Mum on a family walk with your family. You can visit your local beach or go to her favourite outdoor garden close to home.
14. Make a handmade coupon book
The kids can create a personalised coupon book filled with activities or chores they can do for their Mum throughout the year. It could include things like washing the car, cooking a meal, or doing the grocery shopping.
15. Make Mum and Grandma's favourite meals
Get the kids to help make your Mum and Grandma’s favourite dinner. Make it a big celebration and invite all the Mother figures in your life to come over for a combined family meal to celebrate Mother’s Day!
Remember, the most important thing is to spend time with your Mum and show her how much you care!
