Looking for a fantastic new spot to take the kids in Auckland? The Te Waituarua Reserve Playground in Waiata Shores in South Auckland is the place to be! The $2 million playground opened in June 2024 and Fletcher Living have generously fully funded the playground for everyone to enjoy! This newly opened playground is not just another play area – it’s a beautifully designed space inspired by local Māori legends and traditional play.
A Playground with a Story
Te Waituarua Reserve Playground is more than just swings and slides. It’s a place where the legendary guardian taniwha, Kaiwhare, comes to life. The design of the playground incorporates the story of Kaiwhare, the guardian of the Manukau Harbour, who often appears as a stingray (whai). The layout mimics the movement of its fins, and features like the big swing (moari) represent its spine. The playground seamlessly blends these traditional elements with fun play equipment, offering a unique experience for children.
“Fostering a sense of community is a core part of our Fletcher Living purpose. Having a space where families can gather, relax and share some carefree moments encourages this. By collaborating with local iwi, Auckland Council, and the Local Board, we have created a destination playground with a cultural narrative to provide a unique play experience for families,” says Steve Evans, Chief Executive of Fletcher Building’s Residential and Development Division.
Fun for All Ages
Whether your kids are toddlers, school-age, or teens, there’s something for everyone here. The playground includes an impressive 120 metre BMX pump track, designed by pro-BMX rider Byron Scott, perfect for biking, scootering, skateboarding and even roller skates! It’s safe and inclusive, catering to beginners and pros alike.
Natural Beauty and Play
The playground’s design incorporates the natural beauty of the area, with flowing and spinning play equipment symbolising the waves and turbulence of the Manukau Harbour. The contoured fields and plantings outline the shape of the stingray, making the playground not only fun but also a beautiful place to explore.
Future Plans
There’s more to look forward to! A shared path linking Waiata Shores to Conifer Grove is in the works, which will connect to the Southern Cycleway on SH1 to the TE Waituarua Playground making it a recreational area for families to enjoy.
